Car insurance in Alabama is significantly cheaper than national averages. Full-coverage auto insurance costs $156 per month, while liability averages $60 per month. By comparison, the national averages for full and liability-only coverage are $211 and $104 per month, according to Insurify data.

Alabama’s comparatively low population density of less than 100 people per square mile, and its mid-sized population, may contribute to the state’s lower car insurance costs. The number of older vehicles on the road in Alabama may also be a factor, as older cars typically cost less to insure.

Comparing rates from several different insurers is the best way to find a policy that meets your coverage needs and budget.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: COUNTRY Financial

Car insurance rates for young drivers are generally higher compared to adults due to their lack of driving experience and higher accident risk.[3] As a teen, you can still find ways to get cheaper car insurance.

Remaining on your parents’ insurance policy can often result in more affordable rates. And if you’re a minor, you won’t be able to buy your own policy without written consent from a parent or guardian. Choosing a safe car with highly rated safety features can also help lower insurance costs. Additionally, maintaining good academic performance may make you eligible for a good student discount. If you attend college a certain distance away from home, you may also qualify for a student-away-at-school discount.

The overall monthly average cost of car insurance for teens in Alabama is $222. And the cheapest insurer for teen drivers in Alabama is COUNTRY Financial, with monthly rates averaging $62 for liability-only coverage.

To find the cheapest insurance companies for teen drivers in Alabama, refer to the table below, which highlights the average monthly rates of the cheapest options.

The below rates are estimated rates current as of: Sunday, September 1 at 12:00 PM PDT

Alabama car insurance quotes by credit tier

In Alabama, car insurance companies can factor in credit history when determining premiums. Excellent or good credit scores typically lead to lower rates, whereas poor credit scores may result in higher insurance costs. Why do Alabama insurance companies take credit history into account?

“Each insurer creates its own proprietary credit-based insurance score which incorporates elements of a consumer’s credit history. Actuarial studies show that how a person manages their financial affairs is a good predictor of insurance claims,” says Mark Friedlander, director of corporate communications at the Insurance Information Institute. “Statistically, people with a low insurance score are more likely to file a claim.”

The chart below shows how credit scores influence average monthly insurance quotes in Alabama.

Alabama car insurance FAQs

If you’re looking for affordable car insurance in Alabama, this additional information may help. You can also check out Insurify’s guides on how to lower your car insurance premiums for more information on finding the cheapest insurance.

  • How much is car insurance in Alabama?

Car insurance in Alabama costs an average of $156 a month for full-coverage insurance and $60 a month for liability-only insurance.

  • Who has the cheapest car insurance in Alabama?

USAA, State Farm, and Auto-Owners have the cheapest average liability rates in Alabama, according to Insurify data. USAA's liability rates start as low as $37 per month, while State Farm and Auto-Owners offer rates as low as $37 and $37, respectively.

Even though these are the cheapest car insurance companies in the state, you should still compare quotes from multiple companies to see which one offers the best price for the coverage you need.

  • What are the best car insurance companies in Alabama?

USAA, State Farm, and Auto-Owners are Insurify’s picks for best car insurance companies in Alabama. These insurers have high IQ Scores, above-average J.D. Power ratings, and affordable average rates.

  • Is Alabama a no-fault state?

No. Alabama is an at-fault state. Drivers who cause accidents, or carry the majority of the fault for an accident, are responsible for compensating other parties for injuries and property damage.[6]

  • Does Alabama require uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage?

Alabama requires insurance companies to include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in every policy they sell in the state. But drivers can opt out of it by rejecting it in writing.

However, it's a good idea to have UI/UIM coverage, which can help pay for your damages and medical costs if someone driving without insurance, or too little insurance, causes an accident. It can also pay for costs associated with a hit-and-run accident.

  • How many Alabama drivers are uninsured?

In Alabama, 19.5% of drivers are uninsured, according to the most recent data in a 2021 Insurance Research Council report.[7]

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
