Long Beach, California, drivers pay an average of $317 per month for full-coverage car insurance, which is on par with the state’s average rate of $283 per month. But Long Beach drivers still pay lower average rates than drivers who live in Los Angeles, despite its proximity to L.A.

Because insurance companies consider accident rates in cities, Long Beach's lower traffic injury and fatality rates, compared to Los Angeles, may contribute to the city’s lower car insurance premiums.[1]

Long Beach drivers may be able to lower their car insurance rates even more by comparing quotes, looking for discounts, and bundling policies.

Quick Facts
  • Mile Auto, Sun Coast, and Mercury have the cheapest car insurance in Long Beach.

  • Long Beach drivers pay an average of $3,798 per year for full-coverage car insurance.

  • The overall average rate of $234 per month in Long Beach is higher than the overall national average of $154 per month.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Not pleased

Don't opt for this insurance if you're on a budget. I was unaware that this was a cost-per-mile insurance. I was never informed about it, and now I'm paying an extra $20 for roadside assistance that I thought was included. I had mentioned to the representative that I couldn't afford expensive insurance, yet the cost has increased.

Mixed. One representative was confusing and couldn't guide me regarding a text I received which stated my payment, which I had been informed had been processed, had actually gone through. To ensure I was covered, I made the payment. The previous representative had been professional and direct. So, I have a mixed reaction.

Unexpected Rate Increases

Everything was fine until they started to increase my rates, despite having no claims, DUIs, or moving violations. My driving record is clean, I'm almost 63 years old, and yet my rate keeps going up. It seems like there might be some price gouging in the insurance industry. The reason I decided to switch to Clearcover was because they offered me the best rate at that time. However, since then, my rate has only increased. It should be dropping, not going up.

Car insurance requirements in California

Like in many other states, California requires drivers to carry car insurance coverage that meets the state’s minimum requirement. California’s minimums are known as 15/30/5, which translates to the following coverages:[2]

Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$15,000 per person / $30,000 per accident
Property damage liability$5,000 per accident
Important Information

California liability limits are increasing on Jan. 1, 2025, to 30/60/15. This translates to $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury liability and $15,000 per accident for property damage liability.[3]

Although you can drive legally by purchasing liability-only coverage at California’s required limits, you may want more protection that covers more situations. Consider maximizing your auto policy’s protection with these optional coverages:

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: Mile Auto

Having an at-fault accident on your driving record often results in an increase in auto insurance premiums through a surcharge that your insurer will add to your premium for several years. Insurance companies raise rates to offset potential financial risks associated with future accidents and claims.[4] And too many accidents on your record may cause your insurance company to not renew your policy at the end of the term.

Long Beach drivers with an accident on their record pay $185 per month for liability insurance and $386 per month for full-coverage insurance, on average.

Here’s a look at the cheapest car insurance companies for drivers with an at-fault accident in Long Beach.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a DUI: Mile Auto

Driving under the influence is a grave offense that carries heavy consequences, including considerably higher car insurance premiums. In California, a DUI conviction will result in an SR-22 insurance filing requirement with the state, signifying to insurers that you’re a high-risk driver. Insurance companies view a DUI history as a substantial financial liability and often adjust premiums accordingly. If you're convicted of a DUI, your insurer may even cancel your policy mid-term, or decide not to renew it when the current policy term ends.

Liability coverage costs an average of $215 per month for Long Beach drivers with a DUI on their record. Full-coverage policies increase to an average of $449 per month.

If you have a DUI on your record, consider the following insurers in Long Beach that offer the cheapest average monthly quotes.

Cheapest car insurance for seniors: Mile Auto

Age plays a major role in car insurance rates, with a usual trend of decreasing premiums as drivers acquire more experience and reach their mid-20s.

Once drivers reach 70 years old, premiums might slightly increase due to increased accident risks.[5] But senior drivers tend to pay lower premiums, on average, compared to other age groups because of their years of experience and fewer miles driven in retirement.

Senior drivers in Long Beach pay a monthly average of $277 for full-coverage car insurance.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: Mile Auto

Teen drivers in Long Beach pay $242 per month for a minimum-coverage policy, on average.

If you’re a teen driver in Long Beach, one effective method for finding affordable car insurance is to remain on a parent’s insurance policy, as this often results in lower premiums. And if you're younger than 18, you won't be able to buy your own policy unless your parent or guardian gives written permission.

Additionally, look for car insurance companies that offer student-specific discounts, like a good grades discount, student-away-at-school discount, and a discount for completing teenSMART, a widely available driver education course designed to help teens practice safe driving habits and reduce their risk of getting into an accident.

The table below shows the cheapest car insurance companies for Long Beach teen drivers with their own insurance policies.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
