  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Colorado

The car insurance rate you get depends on many different factors, including your driving history, location, how much you drive, gender, age, and potentially your credit.

To get cheap car insurance in Colorado, here are some things you can do:

  • Raise your deductible. A higher deductible means you pay more out of pocket if there’s a claim, but it can result in lower car insurance premiums.

  • Look for discounts that you may qualify for. Insurance companies may offer discounts based on safe driving, having multiple policies with the company, or an affiliation, such as being a military member or a teacher.

  • Compare car insurance rates. Shopping around can help you find the best rates for your situation. Check out prospective rates from multiple insurers to make the search easier.

Car insurance requirements in Colorado

Minimum liability car insurance requirements vary by state. In Colorado, you need to maintain the following car insurance coverage:

Coverage Type
Amount
Bodily injury or death (one person)$25,000
Bodily injury or death (all persons) $50,000
Property damage in accident $15,000

These requirements cover you if you’re found at fault for bodily injury, death, or damage to another party’s vehicle. While this is the minimum requirement, it only covers the other party if you’re found at fault and doesn’t cover your own property or injuries, which is where additional insurance coverage like collision, comprehensive, and medical payments protection can help.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Your driving history can affect your car insurance premiums. If you have a clean record, you’ll get the lowest rates, but drivers with speeding tickets or at-fault accidents end up paying more. Colorado drivers with a driving under the influence (DUI) charge will pay the most.

Here’s a look at average monthly quotes for the cheapest car insurance in Colorado based on driving and accident history.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: State Farm

Young drivers, especially teen drivers, have a higher likelihood of getting into a fatal accident, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.[5] As such, your age can affect your car insurance rate, as insurers consider certain age groups more likely to file a claim.

Liability insurance costs an average of $172 for Colorado teens, and full coverage costs $411 per month.

Teenagers in Colorado pay the highest rate for car insurance. Rates drop further in the 20s and 30s age bracket and mostly trend downward.

The below rates are estimated rates current as of: Sunday, September 1 at 12:00 PM PDT

Colorado car insurance quotes by credit tier

Many states, including Colorado, allow insurers to factor in your credit history when calculating your car insurance rates. Your credit history is a reflection of how you use and manage credit available to you, like credit cards, loans, and more.

Insurers believe your credit history also indicates how likely you are to file a claim. Drivers with good credit pay cheaper car insurance premiums, and drivers with poor credit pay more expensive premiums.

The table below shows what you might pay each month based on your credit tier in Colorado.

Colorado car insurance FAQs

If you’re looking for more information about car insurance in Colorado, this additional information may help as you research your coverage options.

  • Which company has the cheapest car insurance in Colorado?

The top three cheapest insurance companies in Colorado are State Farm, USAA, and American Family. These insurers have the best prices in the state for liability-only insurance, of $47, $61, and $65 per month, respectively. Comparing multiple quotes at once can help you find the cheapest car insurance rate for your situation.

  • What’s the required car insurance coverage in Colorado?

Colorado’s minimum car insurance requirements are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in bodily injury liability coverage and $15,000 per accident in property damage liability coverage.

  • How does credit score affect car insurance premiums in Colorado?

Insurers consider your credit history when determining rates, so having a better credit score typically lowers your costs. A poor credit score is anything that falls below 630, while an excellent credit score is anything above 720.

You don’t need perfect credit to get a good insurance rate, though, since credit is just one of the factors insurers consider when determining car insurance premiums.

  • Is Colorado a no-fault state?

No. Colorado is not a no-fault state. This means if you’re injured in a car accident or your car suffers damage, you have the right to sue the driver responsible for the accident.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
