  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

They Have You By The Short Hairs

I was on a three-lane highway in heavy traffic and couldn't avoid a piece of metal in my lane. I couldn't swerve or I would have hit other cars. Allstate said the accident was the driver's fault and then doubled my insurance cost.

Actual Crash Damages vs. Damages Quoted Over the Phone

There were problems getting the correct amount paid out when I made a claim. I had to escalate the issue to the Senior Vice President to get a proper settlement when a deer hit my truck. There was a $5000 difference between what was paid out when the estimator assessed the value of damage to my truck and the actual estimate done by a local car dealership. The Senior Vice President agreed that the amount of damage done was the amount quoted by the local car dealership.

Allstate Drivewise vs. Farmers Signal

Allstate and Farmers have telematics programs that can give you a discount on your rates if you’re a safe driver.

Drivewise is Allstate’s free telematics tool that tracks your driving behaviors and rewards good driving with discounts. This is an optional program that you can enroll in using Allstate’s mobile app. You can receive a policy discount just for enrolling in Drivewise, and it’s possible to receive a policy credit every six months. The amount and type of savings vary between states.

Farmer offers a similar program called Signal. You can download the Signal by Farmers app on your smartphone, and it monitors your driving behaviors, including your speed, braking habits, and when you use your phone. When you renew your policy, you can potentially save money if you practice safe driving. But if you demonstrate risky driving behaviors, it could cause your premiums to increase when you renew.

Allstate vs. Farmers: Which is the cheapest?

When comparing Allstate and Farmers on price, Allstate has the cheapest car insurance, according to Insurify rate data. Allstate premiums are lower on average for drivers with a clean record, as well as drivers with a violation, including a ticket, accident, or DUI.

The cost of your insurance policy will depend on many factors, including your age, gender, ZIP code, driving history, type of insurance coverage, and the car you drive.[1]

Allstate: Cheapest for drivers with a clean driving record

If you want to keep your insurance premiums low, aim to keep a clean driving record. A record that includes an accident and speeding tickets can result in higher insurance costs. Allstate offers cheaper insurance for people with clean driving records.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
