If you work in the public sector, auto insurers may offer discounts because of your occupation. In fact, GEICO’s first customer base was government employees, and it still advertises special discounts for federal employees.[1]
Here’s what you need to know about getting car insurance as a federal employee and the discounts you may qualify for.
Insurance companies may offer government employees discounts through membership organizations.

How we chose the best insurers for federal employees
Data scientists at Insurify analyzed more than 40 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partner insurers across the United States to compile the car insurance quotes, statistics, and data visualizations displayed on this page. We considered car insurance companies that had specific affiliate or occupational discounts that could apply to federal employees. Then, we applied our Insurify Quality (IQ) Score to compare the best options for federal employees.
Where to find discounts for federal employees
Not all car insurance companies offer federal employee discounts, and few advertise them on their websites. So, determining if a company has car insurance discounts through an online search can be tough.
The best way to find out if an insurer has federal employee discounts is by asking an insurance agent when you get a quote. If a company offers discounts for federal employees, you may have to be a member of an organization through your job.
Some examples include the National Federation of Federal Employees, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, and the Federal Managers Association. The Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund provides an extensive list of unions, management associations, professional organizations, and affinity groups that may qualify for discounts. Insurance companies may not offer a discount for just being a federal employee or part of a membership organization.
Here are some auto insurance companies that advertise federal employee or military affiliation discounts:

Other ways to save on car insurance
While discounts are an easy way to decrease the cost of your car insurance, they aren’t the only way to save. Here are other strategies you can use to save on auto coverage:
Compare quotes
Insurance premiums fluctuate regularly, which means you might not be getting the best deal on your auto insurance policy. Comparing auto insurance policies from multiple insurance companies at least once a year is one of the most effective ways to save.
Drive safely
Safe drivers get better rates on the road because they’re less likely to file a claim. If you have a clean record, you may have some of the lowest rates possible.
Bundle policies
Multi-policy discounts save you money if you buy two or more policies through the same insurance company. Combining auto and home insurance or auto and renters insurance are common ways to bundle policies.
Increase your deductible
The higher your deductible, the lower your premiums may be, and vice versa. Increasing your deductible from $500 to $1,000 can help you save money. Just make sure you can afford the deductible if you need to file a claim.
Federal employee car insurance FAQs
Learn how to switch your car insurance in a few easy steps, and take a look at this additional information about federal employee insurance discounts, including their eligibility and availability.
Are federal employees eligible for USAA insurance?
Federal employees who are active or retired military members qualify for USAA. Its benefits also extend to veterans and immediate family members. Federal employees who aren’t part of the military community don’t qualify for USAA insurance. If you’re not a military member, GEICO and Travelers are other insurance companies to consider.
Is GEICO for government employees?
Not exclusively. While GEICO originally served government employees, the insurance company doesn’t have employment requirements for drivers. Government employees can check if they qualify for discounts using GEICO’s membership discount search tool.
Does AAA have a federal employee discount?
It’s unclear. AAA doesn’t advertise a nationwide federal employee discount. It may offer professional and group discounts, but you’ll have to call your local AAA agent to find out.
Methodology
Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.
Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).
Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:
Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible
Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
