Car insurance in Pennsylvania averages $174 monthly for full coverage and $91 for minimum coverage, Insurify data shows. Pennsylvania drivers pay less for car insurance than the national averages of $211 per month for full coverage and $104 for liability-only policies.

A comparatively low fatality rate, which has declined over the past few years, likely contributes to the commonwealths lower car insurance costs.[1] Pennsylvania also has a low population density and only three cities with populations of more than 100,000 residents. Less traffic congestion in an area can mean fewer accidents and lower car insurance rates.

Commonwealth drivers can save even more by comparing car insurance quotes from multiple companies. Heres what you need to know about finding affordable car insurance in Pennsylvania.

Quick Facts
  • State Farm, Mile Auto, and Erie are the three cheapest insurers for Pennsylvania drivers.

  • Pennsylvania drivers pay an average of $2,088 per year for full-coverage car insurance.

  • Driving without insurance in Pennsylvania can result in a $300 fine and a three-month suspension of your driver’s license and vehicle registration.[2]

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Could be Better

I had an unfortunate accident and they were very helpful at the time managing the claim, so the company was great. My rate did go up which I expected and it was reasonable at the time. When my policy was supposed to renew the following year, they wanted to again increase my rate by almost $100 per month. The insurance broker I dealt with was very rude when I called about canceling my policy because unfortunately, I can't afford that kind of increase as a single parent with one income.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Pennsylvania

Finding car insurance that fits into your budget is essential, but a cheap policy doesn’t always equal quality coverage. You should choose an insurer with solid industry rankings and a good track record of quality customer service.

The following tips can help you find a reputable car insurance company at the best price:[3]

  • Shop around. You should compare quotes from at least three quality insurers to find the coverage you need at an affordable price.

  • Increase your deductible. Choosing a higher deductible can help you lower your premiums. Make sure you can pay the deductible if you need to file a claim.

  • Add discounts. You should always take advantage of discounts related to your driving history, vehicle safety features, membership with certain organizations, and more.

  • Maintain good credit. Insurers can use your credit-based insurance score to determine how likely you are to file a claim. Improve or maintain your credit score to qualify for better premiums on your insurance policy.

  • Drive a safe vehicle. Insuring a car with safety features, like anti-lock brakes, can lower your premiums and qualify you for policy discounts.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Pennsylvania: State Farm

A liability-only policy covers bodily injury and property damage to other parties when you’re at fault in an accident. While this is the most cost-effective option, it doesn’t provide coverage for your medical expenses and vehicle damage. You may have to pay out of pocket for your own vehicle repairs if you cause an accident and you dont have full-coverage car insurance.[4] And, if the damages or injuries you cause cost more than your policy limits, you may be on the hook to pay the difference.

Liability-only insurance in Pennsylvania costs $91 per month, on average. Check out the chart below to find Pennsylvania’s most cost-effective liability-only car insurance.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Pennsylvania: Mile Auto

A full-coverage policy pays for your vehicle repairs, even if you cause an accident. This type of policy includes liability, comprehensive, and collision coverages. Frequent or high-risk drivers — and people with expensive vehicles — should consider a full-coverage policy. If you have a loan or a lease on your car, most lenders require you to purchase full coverage.

“Having adequate coverage ensures that you and other drivers will be protected in the case of an accident, regardless of who was at fault,” says Kyle Pearman, agency owner of the Atherton Group in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania drivers pay an average of $174 per month for a full-coverage policy.

Full coverage typically costs more than a liability-only policy, but you can still find coverage at a competitive price. Find the most affordable insurers for full-coverage policies in Pennsylvania below.

Car insurance requirements in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a no-fault state, which means that insurers must cover their policyholders’ medical bills related to an accident, regardless of fault.

In Pennsylvania, you must carry a minimum amount of liability insurance, as well as medical benefits coverage through personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments (MedPay) coverage. PIP pays for a broad range of medical expenses after a car accident, such as lost wages and rehabilitation costs. MedPay covers medical expenses and funeral costs.

The specific minimum coverage requirements in Pennsylvania include the following:[5]

Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$15,000 per person / $30,000 per accident
Property damage liability$5,000 per accident
Medical benefits$5,000

You may decide to purchase more than the state’s minimum coverage for more protection. Consider the following optional coverages:

    Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

If the at-fault party doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your medical expenses or vehicle repairs, this insurance fills coverage gaps. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage can also pay for damages from a hit-and-run accident.

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/665da91bf7/comprehensive-coverage.svg

    Comprehensive coverage

After a non-collision event, like weather, theft, or vandalism, causes vehicle damage, comprehensive insurance pays for repairs.

    Collision coverage

Collision insurance kicks in after a collision with another vehicle or object, even if you caused it.

    Gap coverage

Gap insurance, also known as guaranteed asset protection, can help pay off your car loan if an accident totals your car (or someone steals it) and you owe more on your loan than your insurance company pays.

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/9ffcc07fc9/damage-from-aircraft.svg

    Accident forgiveness coverage

Some insurance companies offer accident forgiveness coverage, which guarantees your premium wont increase after your first at-fault accident. Depending on the insurance company, accident forgiveness may be a free add-on, or you may have to pay extra for it.

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/100x100/9997698e9e/emergency-roadside-service.svg

    Roadside assistance coverage

Many insurers offer roadside assistance coverage as an add-on that connects you with a professional towing or repair service when your car breaks down. The service can typically send someone to help with issues like a flat tire, dead battery, or lost keys.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Driving incidents include at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs, and other moving violations. If you have an incident on your motor record, your probability of having another is higher than someone with a clean record. Therefore, your risk profile increases, and your insurer may charge you more for an auto policy.

Drivers with a clean record typically pay the lowest premiums.[6]

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: State Farm

If you have a recent at-fault accident on your record, insurers may consider you a risky driver. The collision can stay on your record for several years, and as a result, you may pay higher insurance premiums during that period of time.

Drivers in Pennsylvania with an accident on record pay a monthly average of $121 for a liability-only policy.

Fortunately, some insurers still offer competitive premiums to drivers with past at-fault accidents. In the table below, you can see how monthly liability rates for drivers with a clean record compare to liability rates for drivers with an accident.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a DUI: State Farm

DUI convictions can have significant legal and financial repercussions, including a sizable increase in your insurance premiums. After your first DUI charge in Pennsylvania, you can face up to six months of probation, a $300 fine, and mandatory alcohol safety school.[7]

Some insurers will refuse to insure you after one or more DUI charges, and others may issue more expensive quotes for coverage due to your high-risk status. Pennsylvania drivers with a DUI pay monthly averages of $139 for liability coverage and $265 for full coverage.

But you can still find cost-effective options for car insurance if you have a DUI in Pennsylvania. Start your search by considering the insurers in the table below.

Cheapest car insurance for seniors: State Farm

Aging can affect driving ability because of factors like slower reaction times and decreased vision, which increase the risk of accidents. Insurers account for this risk by charging drivers slightly higher premiums around age 70.

Senior drivers in Pennsylvania pay $69 per month for liability coverage and $132 per month for full coverage, on average.

Pennsylvania car insurance quotes by credit tier

Pennsylvania allows insurers to check your credit history and use it to determine the likelihood of you filing a claim. An excellent or good credit score can result in lower premiums, and a poor credit score can result in higher premiums.

Here’s a breakdown of what your insurance premiums may look like for each credit tier.

Pennsylvania car insurance FAQs

You should prioritize your coverage needs when looking for car insurance in Pennsylvania. The following information should help you navigate finding cheap coverage in the state.

  • How much is car insurance in Pennsylvania?

On average, Pennsylvania drivers pay $91 per month for liability and $174 per month for full-coverage car insurance. Your specific quote depends on your driving record, credit history, age, vehicle type, ZIP code, insurer, coverage levels, and more.

  • What is the cheapest car insurance company in Pennsylvania?

State Farm is the cheapest car insurance company in Pennsylvania, with monthly liability-only rates of $51.

  • Can you buy dollar-a-day insurance in Pennsylvania?

No. Pennsylvania doesn’t offer dollar-a-day insurance. But drivers living in New Jersey can purchase dollar-a-day insurance.

  • What’s the shortest car insurance coverage term you can buy in Pennsylvania?

Most standard car insurance policies last six or 12 months. But Hugo, a newer insurer, sells policies that last between three days and six months in Pennsylvania and several other states. You can buy coverage for as little as three days at a time, paying smaller amounts more frequently instead of all at once. But the insurer only offers state-minimum coverage.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
