What is Dairyland auto insurance?

Dairyland Insurance Company formed in 1953 in Wisconsin and originally sold specialty car insurance policies for people who struggled to get coverage. The company was acquired by Sentry in 1966, and at that time, Sentry began offering motorcycle insurance as well. With Sentry as its parent company, Dairyland grew from a regional Midwest insurer to a nationwide provider.

Dairyland now offers auto insurance, motorcycle insurance, off-road insurance, and more. The company is known for providing nonstandard auto insurance.

Liability Only
Liability-only insurance, sometimes called minimum-coverage insurance, pays for bodily injury and property damage to others in an accident the policyholder causes. It does not pay for the insured’s own damages.

Full Coverage
Full-coverage car insurance generally includes liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage, and may include other optional coverages such as uninsured motorist coverage. Collision covers a policyholder’s repair or replacement costs in case of an accident. Comprehensive covers damages caused by non-accident events. The average quote displayed here reflects policies with the following coverage limits: $50,000 bodily injury liability per person; $100,000 bodily injury liability per accident; $50,00 property damage liability per accident; $1,000 collision deductible; and a $1,000 comprehensive deductible.

Dairyland began as a regional company in Wisconsin in 1953, selling car insurance to drivers who couldn’t get standard coverage. Acquired by Sentry in 1966, Dairyland now sells auto, motorcycle, and off-road insurance nationwide, and still caters to non-standard drivers. The company also sells renters, RV, and life insurance, and car insurance in Mexico. Although Dairyland has many positive customer comments on review websites, it has a slightly higher-than-average number of complaints in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Customer Complaint Index. A.M. Best, however, gives the company an A+ rating for financial stability and credit.

Pros
  • Many positive customer reviews

  • Provides coverage to drivers who may not be able to get it elsewhere

Cons
  • More complaints than expected with the NAIC

  • Rates tend to be higher than competitors

How does Dairyland auto insurance work?

Dairyland provides insurance coverage to drivers in exchange for monthly or annual premiums. When you apply for a policy with Dairyland, the company will assess your risk based on factors like your driving history. The insurer will then set your car insurance rates accordingly.

Dairyland profits by collecting more money in premiums than it pays out in claims or uses for operating expenses. This is known as underwriting income, and by law in most states, it can’t be excessive. Most car insurance companies also invest underwriting income in low-risk investments to grow their income.

How to get an auto insurance quote from Dairyland

The easiest way to get a car insurance quote from Dairyland is to use an online platform like Insurify to compare quotes across multiple providers in your area. Chris Januski, an insurance broker with the Wasiczko Agency, says comparing quotes can help you get the best deal. “Not all companies look at the same driver the same way,” he says. “By comparing quotes, you have a better opportunity to find a company that will offer you the coverage you want with the best price.”

Here’s how to submit a Dairyland quote request through Insurify:

  1. Navigate to the Insurify car insurance page and enter your ZIP code.

  2. Answer a few basic questions.

  3. Enter details about your vehicle, such as the year, make, and model.

  4. Tell Insurify what you’ll use the car for and estimate your mileage. You can also add another vehicle.

  5. Enter your personal details, such as your name, birthdate, and estimated credit score.

  6. Answer questions about your previous car insurance.

  7. Enter details about your driving history.

  8. See your quotes side by side.

Once you fill out the necessary details, you can review a comparison of quotes from different car insurance companies. You can even adjust your coverage levels and deductible to fit your budget.

Dairyland auto insurance rates by driving history

Auto insurance providers check your driving history to assess the risk to insure you. If you have speeding tickets, DUIs, or accidents on your record, it could indicate to your insurance company that you’re not taking precautions behind the wheel.[1] Your insurer may increase your rates to reflect the higher likelihood that you’ll file a claim.[2]

“Accident and claims frequency and severity can have a huge impact on insurance premiums,” says Januski. “On average, a violation or claim will stay on your record for approximately three years, and a single claim can increase the cost of insurance by more than 20%.” Here are the average rates for full-coverage car insurance you can expect from Dairyland based on your driving history.

Dairyland car insurance cost by age

Age is also an important factor in determining your car insurance premiums. Car insurance rates are especially expensive for teen drivers, who are almost three times as likely to die in a crash as drivers aged 20 and older.[3] Januski says rates tend to come down at 25, and most companies begin to increase rates for drivers over the age of 60.

Here’s what Dairyland’s full-coverage car insurance costs on average based on age.

Dairyland car insurance discounts

Dairyland offers a variety of money-saving discounts you may be eligible for, which can reduce your car insurance cost. Not all discounts are available in all states, but the following discounts may apply to your policy:

  • Multi-car discount: If you insure more than one car with Dairyland under one policy, you may see a discount on your premiums.

  • Advanced quote discount: Get a quote from Dairyland at least one week before you need coverage to begin to get a discount for being prepared.

  • Transfer discount: If you’ve had a policy with another car insurance company for at least six months, Dairyland will apply a discount.

  • Payment frequency discount: Choosing to pay your premiums quarterly, every six months, or once a year — rather than monthly — can save you money with a payment frequency discount.

  • Homeowners discount: Dairyland offers discounts to homeowners who insure their houses. Tenants with renters insurance may also get a discount in some states.

  • Anti-theft discount: If you have an anti-theft device installed on your car, Dairyland will give you a discount. Bear in mind, other car insurance companies offer more discount opportunities, including multi-policy discounts and usage-based savings.

Dairyland vs. other insurance companies

The car insurance market is highly saturated, and you have many options beyond Dairyland if you need a car insurance policy. Here’s how Dairyland compares to some of the top providers in the industry.

Dairyland vs. State Farm

State Farm was the largest property and casualty insurer in the country as of 2021 and offers many insurance products in addition to auto coverage. The company has the top financial strength grade from A.M. Best and is also ranked above average by J.D. Power for claims satisfaction. However, customer reviews of State Farm on independent review websites are inferior compared to Dairyland.

State Farm offers many of the same coverages as Dairyland but also offers rideshare coverage to Uber and Lyft drivers. State Farm’s average premiums for car insurance are also cheaper — $125 for liability-only insurance and $175 for full-coverage car insurance. Drivers may also find more discounts with State Farm than Dairyland, including two telematics programs that can save you money based on your actual driving behavior.

Dairyland vs. GEICO

GEICO is a nationwide auto insurer that offers bundling discounts for drivers who also get homeowners or renters insurance. Like State Farm, the insurer has an A++ financial strength grade from A.M. Best. GEICO isn’t as highly ranked for claims satisfaction but still scores above average. However, the company’s customer reviews are poor compared to Dairyland’s.

GEICO offers many of the same coverage options as Dairyland but also provides mechanical breakdown coverage, which is similar to a car warranty. GEICO also offers a greater variety of discounts, including a good student discount and a mobile app usage-based savings program.

Dairyland vs. Farmers

Farmers insures 10 million households across all 50 states, offering vehicle, home, life, and business insurance products. J.D. Power ranked Farmers highly for claims satisfaction, and A.M. Best gave it an A financial strength grade. In comparison, Dairyland received an A+ A.M. Best rating. Customer reviews for Farmers on third-party sites also had lower ratings than Dairyland has.

Farmers provides many specialty coverages that Dairyland doesn’t offer, including rideshare coverage, loss of use coverage, full windshield and glass coverage, and new car replacement coverage. The company charges more for liability insurance than Dairyland, with an average premium of $218, but has lower rates for full-coverage insurance, with an average premium of $317. Farmers also offers a greater number of discounts, including discounts for young drivers.
